About
This course provides comprehensive safe driving training specifically designed for caregivers and support staff who transport individuals with disabilities or special needs. The curriculum covers essential pre-trip preparations including vehicle inspections, route planning, and ensuring driver fitness, while emphasizing the critical importance of proper passenger safety measures such as wheelchair securement, appropriate restraints and harnesses, and maintaining clear communication with passengers throughout the journey. The training addresses both fundamental driving safety principles—including maintaining safe following distances, obeying traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and avoiding distractions—as well as specialized considerations for transporting vulnerable individuals, such as having two staff members present for vehicle loading/unloading when possible and never leaving passengers unattended on lifts. Additional focus areas include adapting driving behaviors for challenging conditions like nighttime and inclement weather, proper vehicle maintenance protocols, and the absolute prohibition of driving under the influence, all designed to ensure the safety, security, and dignity of both drivers and the individuals they serve during transportation.
